Knowledge of Neoprene

Chloroprene rubber (cr) is the polymerization of chloroprene CH2 = ccl-ch = CH2 (2-chloro-1,3-butadiene) or their copolymers with other monomers. Acetylene is the important raw material for the manufacture of chloroprene. Various types of polychloroprene can be prepared by emulsion polymerization. By adjusting the polymerization process, no crosslinking and branched polymer (so-called alpha polymer) can be produced. A large number of different forms of neoprene can be classified into two categories according to their structure and characteristics.

1. The first type is the polymer which does not contain sulfur. The important regulator used in synthesis is mercaptan.

The 2 and second categories are chloroprene rubber containing sulfur in the molecular chain, and sulfur exists in the form of polysulfide bridge. The regulator used in the manufacturing process is sulfur or sulfur and mercaptan. The molecular weight distribution of chloroprene rubber is wide and the average molecular weight is 10~20. Although polychloroprene has high unsaturation, it still has high chemical stability and resistance to various forms of aging. This is because the electronegativity of chlorine atoms on double bonded carbon atoms attracts the electron layer of the PI bond, reducing the electron density of the double bond, thus reducing the reactivity of the double bond. The chlorine atom itself loses mobility and reactivity.

Density: 1200 ~ 1240kg/m3. Glass transition temperature: -40 C. The melting temperature of crystalline phase is 40~65 C.

The presence of chlorine in polychloroprene makes it nonflammable, while the polarity of the polymer makes it resistant to fatty hydrocarbon swelling and has high adhesion to metals.

At the beginning of its invention, it was developed as an oil-resistant artificial rubber to replace the raw rubber. So far, neoprene is still widely used. In any case, the unique physical properties combination of neoprene has been applied to more than a thousand applications in the entire industry, which is widely known.

The properties of Cr depend on the microstructure of polymer, and its processability depends on the molecular weight and distribution of polymer, the number and distribution of branched chains and crosslinks, and its chemical properties depend on the influence of chlorine atoms at the edge of carbon atoms. The basic variety of Cr is homopolymer of chloroprene. The crystallinity of the polymer decreases with the aging of the polymer. The adhesive CR used in practice is highly crystalline because it is polymerized below 20 degrees.

Important performance

Resistance limit, thermal-neoprene has a practical high temperature, continuous application range of 80-95 degrees centigrade, in this range, it shows good physical characteristics, exhaustive application, special formula can reach 120 degrees centigrade, beyond this limit will not make neoprene soften or melt, but may cause hardening or loss of elasticity. Cold - in - 20 to minus 25 degrees Celsius application, performance only slightly changed, below this temperature in the brittle temperature, (- 40 degrees Celsius) before gradually hardening, special formula is allowed to apply temperature as low as minus 55 degrees Celsius.

Remarkable resistance to wax, fat, oil, lubricants and various petroleum products.

Good properties such as alkali resistance, dilute mineral acid and inorganic salt solution.

Suitable formulation has good ozone and weather performance.

It can obviously be immersed in water or buried under the soil for a long time.

Bending resistance, distortion is remarkable, anti compression distortion is good.

Important uses

Products manufactured with neoprene include: outer covers for wire and cable, gaskets for industrial use, rubber hoses, belts, adhesive tapes, sealants for construction engineering, structural bearings, foamed products, various adhesives, coatings, industrial/agricultural/automotive, extruded/molded products, as well as a variety of footwear, paper, packaging and construction industries.
